the importance of EAting right

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Eating good food that is pesticide free and grown organically has assumed much importance in the post COVID-19 world.

A report by the World Health Organization says, “it is imperative for the food industry to reinforce personal hygiene measures and provide refresher training on food hygiene principles2 to eliminate or reduce the risk of food surfaces and food packaging materials becoming contaminated with the virus from food workers.” Naturally then, the source of where your food comes from is of vital importance – more than ever before.

Grow Your Food

So, what if you take control of what you eat by simply growing it? Well if you are living in a community that promotes organic food, this is the answer to your prayers.  At Vijayanagara Eco Village (VEV), a fundamental pillar of design is organic food. As a fundamental philosophy, the trellis is integrated with the public realm to improve organic food production. Homes in the community have land where members can grow their vegetables. So, whether you choose to have a terrace garden on a waterproof turf or grow vegetables using aquaponics or hydroponics, there are options galore. The community will have mentors to build the vegetable garden. The best part is you grow what you eat, without the fear of pesticides and harmful chemicals that are part of regular vegetables at supermarkets. Also, you can teach children where their food comes from and what kind of effort is required to grow them. Gardening is also known to have therapeutic benefits and can also be a way to relieve your stress. And as you spend more time at home, spending time in the garden can give you the much-needed break from the monotony of work.

Community Gardens

Apart from growing food at home, you can also be part of community growing activities. Food forests and community gardens at VEV will ensure that you explore your green thumbs. While serving the environment with a green cover, the food forest will also ensure that the community harvests its own food. Growing importance of eating clean, organic vegetables and plant-based eating, a concept like this is going to be a vital aspect in choosing the community you want to live in. Likewise, at the community gardens that will add a dash of colour, you can also volunteer your time with in house experts and learn a thing or two about flowers, vegetables and herbs. And then you can put the same to use within your home too. A great activity to bond with family as well as other members of the community, while you pick up essential skills, going green has never been more fun.
