Bangalore hit high pollution level in seven months

Bangalore air pollution is hitting a new high since the past seven months; the air quality in Bangalore has severely worsened causing, concern among citizens and experts, which is particularly owing to the raging pandemic.

Monday, November 2, has recorded the highest air pollution and that has been exceptionally bad in Bangalore, with the air quality index (AQI) hovering between moderated pollution to very poor throughout the day. It has been the worst day since the lockdown started at the end of March. “When the AQI gets low level, it can cause respiratory illness, and people should stay indoors or wear a pollution mask outdoors,” Rahul Bedi, weather and air quality enthusiast, said.

In winter, the air quality generally goes down due to various factors, particularly in the southern peninsula, increasing the particulate matter concentration levels. For instance, the real-time PM presence measured at Rahul’s station showed 229 micrograms/cubic meters, which fall under the low level of 121-250 microgram/cubic meter. Although we’re probably going to spend most of the winter months staying indoors to be on the safe side, do practice caution and be extra-careful while stepping out next time.

So is wearing a mask the solution? While it might help in preventing our exposure to Corona Virus, it cannot fully remove the pollutants we breathe in. How do we protect our homes, community from air pollution? At the community level here are few things you can definitely do.

What can you do to get better air quality?

  1. Ensure ample green cover around your home and in your community to replenish fresh air. Add more plants and more plants.
  2. Use plants as a filter to stop dust, pollution from entering your community. Make sure your compound wall is biophilic and has the right plants to prevent dust from entering
  3. Let natural ventilation take over. Ensure you have enough fresh air, sunlight coming into the community
  4. Dispose off waste responsibly. Proper segregation and disposal ensure that there are no harmful fumes and pollution due to waste.
  5. Add water curtains, fountains to cut out dust particles.
  6. Help communities around your place to stay clean, adopt sustainable practices of disposing waste, add trees

What if you have a chance to design a community that keeps all these and kore points in mind? What if you can live in a biophilic community that promises better indoor and outdoor air quality? Then you must check out our Vijayanagara Ecovillage.
